Back Pain Relief
Recent studies show that a variety of treatments can ease pain without surgery. This is especially true for people who suffer low back pain. There are a number of non-surgical options depending on what the problems are that are outlined in the American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians' guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of low back pain. The guidelines call nonspecific low back pain or lower back pain that is not due to a specific type of condition like a slipped disk, a compressed nerve, cancer, or a fracture. And if you have this type of back pain,  spinal manipulation, acupuncture, and medications are all an option for treatment.

Back Pain Care
While doctors used to tell people with back pain to stay in bed, the advice was really not very good and may have actually made the back pain worse than it was to start with. Now the advice is to continue with normal physical activities as long as they don't hurt your back. Keeping active may help to make the back stronger.

Back Pain Treatments
Many people with back pain have very acute pain, but most just have a persistent pain that is fairly moderate, or chronic low back pain. There are a number of possible back pain treatments that include, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, exercise therapy, spinal manipulation from a chiropractor, osteopath, or physical therapist, intensive interdisciplinary rehabilitation (physical, vocational, and behavioral therapies provided by multiple providers with different clinical backgrounds), acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, and progressive relaxation.
